The George Kessler Plan for Indianapolis: The Past as Guide for the Future.

Free lectures by Kurt Culbertson and James Fadely.

Culbertson, Chairman and CEO of Design Workshop in Aspen, CO, focuses on history and contemporary relevance of George Kessler’s interconnected park and boulevard design for the capital city.

James Fadely discusses Thomas Taggart, Mayor of Indianapolis from 1895-1901 and father of Indianapolis’s public parks system. Indiana Landmarks Center, Indianapolis. 5:30 pm bar, 6 pm lecture. Online registration requested.

Kessler Bike Tour – April 19th

George Kessler designed an extensive system of parks and boulevards in Indianapolis that remains in use today and contributes to a growing network of bike paths. As a continuation of the lecture, staged with support from Hoosier Rails to Trails Council and Indiana Trails Fund, our bike tour begins and ends at Riverside Park Recreation Center, 2420 E. Riverside Drive, emphasizing Kessler-designed parks and boulevards dotted with architectural gems.

Bike tours will begin at 9, 9:15  and 9:30 a.m. in groups of 15.

We’ll be cycling rain or shine unless weather is treacherous. Participants supply their own bikes (helmet required).

* Route is approximately 10-12 miles and includes the historic Taggart Memorial Arch in Riverside Park and heads east along Fall Creek Parkway, south on the Monon Trail to Brookside Park and back to Riverside along the Cultural Trail and the White River Trail.  Along the way, we’ll stop to discuss city history and preservation issues related to George Kessler’s system of parks, parkways and boulevards.

IMPD East District Community Day

On behalf of Commander James Waters of the Indianapolis Metropolitan police Department East District.  We are in the process of organizing our 8th Annual Community Day. Which will be held on Wednesday July 9th, 2014 from 10: am -2:00pm on the Grounds of Brookside Park in front of the Recreation Center located at Olney/Brookside Parkway S. Dr.

Community Day is an opportunity for the officers that serve the citizens of East District to say thank you for the community’s support throughout the year for their assistance in fighting crime.  Citizens have the opportunity to meet the police officers who patrol their communities and businesses as well as visiting the many displays from our department and other agencies as well.  In addition this year we will partner with Indy Parks to ensure our little citizens interact with the police and community.

This event is completely free to the public and is not possible without help and donations from our community partners.  To ensure IMPD East District Community Day is successful.  We would like to garner the input of our East District citizens for this community event.

If you have ideas or would like to be on the community day committee it would speak volumes.  We need innovative citizens with ideas, access to possible vendors, donors, donations, are if you would like to be a part of making this a great event for all.

Great Indy Clean-UP April 5th

Several neighborhoods and organizations are getting out in their communities on April 5th for the next Great Indy Clean-Up.  Make sure you check with your neighborhood association/block club to see if you can volunteer for this great event.  You can also volunteer with organizations like the East 10th Street Civic Association who is getting out in the 10th & Rural area to clean up that intersection.
